Northumberland Name Books

NORTHUMBERLAND NAME BOOKS  – PLACES & PEOPLE c.1860

The Ordnance Survey Name Books are the records of the fieldwork by Royal Engineers surveyors as a basis for the First Edition Six Inch maps and subsequent maps. As well as surveying, they collected information about places and place-names from local informants. The Northumberland Name Books project seeks to make this valuable resource available to researchers and the general public and will begin with a pilot phase of digitising and transcribing indexes and a selection of whole books. Transcription will be by volunteers, with initial training and guidance and checking throughout. The handwriting is in the main easily legible. Transcribers will ideally be able to work on their own computer.
There will be a preliminary meeting or anyone interested in transcribing on Thursday 21st April from 6.30pm to 8.00pm in the Commercial Union House (4th floor), Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne. Any queries or offers to help to Diana Whaley on Diana.Whaley@ncl.ac.uk.

Black and white image of the store front of Andrews in 1930s

Known as the effervescent health salt, Andrews Liver Salt was first made in Newcastle in 1894 and was taken to relieve constipation and heartburn.
Thanks to a kind donation from pharmaceutical company Sanofi in 2015, Discovery are able to display a range of nostaglic old packaging, advertisements and images from their years at Fawdon Manufacturing Centre.
