AGM 2014
Saturday 8TH Nov.- 1.15pm
Newbiggin Maritime Centre, Newbiggin by the Sea
The speaker is to be Dr Keith Armstrong who is a key member of the Thomas Spence Society.
Newcastle born Spence (1750-1814), known as the Poor Man’s Revolutionary, was a radical writer and publisher who believed strongly in press freedom and the common ownership of land. His reputation was tarnished for many years by the actions of some members of the Society of Spencean Philanthropists who were involved in the Cato Street Conspiracy of 1820, an attempt to blow up the entire cabinet. Dr. Armstrong has been at the forefront of rehabilitating Spence’s place in radical thinking and is co-editor of a book on Spence published on 14th. Sept. to mark the bi-centenary of his death.
The AGM, following this presentation, will begin at 2.20pm and conclude with the raffle at 3.15pm.

OUTINGS 2014
An average of 30 Members and their guests enjoyed 3 very successful and interesting visits in May and June.
After a very welcome cup of tea /coffee phased guided tours of Bywell Hall at the beginning of Mayalso provided the opportunity to explore the local Churches of St. Peter and St. Andrew.
Later that month we travelled south to the Land of The Prince Bishops to visit Auckland Castle and the nearby Roman Camp of Vinovium. Members will be interested to know that the former private Chapel featured in the BBC TV “Songs of Praise” earlier this month. Binchester also hit the national newspaper headlines last week following news that the Church of England has decided to dispose of the adjoining property raising fears that the archaeological remains are under threat. Fortunately Jonathan Ruffer, the wealthy philanthropist who stepped in to save the former Bishops’ Palace, has shown interest.
The outings were rounded off in June with a return visit to Naworth Castle. We were welcomed by Mr. Howard with refreshments and an introductory talk in the very pleasant surroundings of the refurbished Great Hall. This was followed by tours of the other parts of his home. Some Members then moved on to nearbyLanercost Priory for lunch.
