A POOR LITTLE HOUSE
Our speaker this evening is Jane Bowen author of the book “A Poor Little House”, published in 2005, which tells the story of Belford Union Workhouse and its people from 1836 to 1930. Jane, a former Head of a Secondary Modern School, is a member of Belford History Society and became involved in the history of the workhouse upon her retirement to Belford.
NEWCASTLE CITY GUIDES
heritage tours of Newcastle and Gateshead the Newcastle Association of City Guides are planning a new training course for volunteers. Potential trainees will after a successful interview be invited to join quite an extensive course of lectures, walks and individual study throughout 2011 in preparation for the 2012 season of Tours. Upon successful completion of the course candidates are invited to become members of the Newcastle Association of City Guides and be included on a rota for conducting walking tours, on an unpaid voluntary basis, of Newcastle and Gateshead. Further details are available on the flyers available this evening and the procedure for booking your place is outlined in full.
DARRAS HALL CENTENARY
The Society’ exhibition to commemorate the 100th AGM of the Darras Hall Estate committee was first held during March, April and May this year in the URC Church. It
was subsequently repeated at Party in the Park in June and in St. Mary’s Church during the recent Heritage Open Days earlier this month. There have been many visitors to the display but we were very surprised to have two former incumbents of Camp 69 return for a nostalgic visit to the area. Ukranian born Osyph Harisym and Peter Dimitrio, came to England in the late 1940’s and are now UK citizens living in Newcastle. They attended with Osyph’s daughter Tania Hall.
In addition we also met relatives of Dominic Jaremko, a former colleague of Osyph and Peter, who sadly had died in March, only 2 weeks before the exhibition started.
OCTOBER MEETING
Please note that because of illness there has been a change to the programme. The speaker in October will be Andrew Weber who will talk on "The Restoration of the north wall of St. Lawrence's Church, Warkworth.”

DONATION
A family bible, which is in very good condition, was recently donated to the Society but as it has no connection with Ponteland it is of little historic interest as an addition to our archives. It also has no intrinsic value particularly as the family detail pages have been removed. The Committee have therefore decided to dispose of it free to a good home. If you are interested please contact Jean Robson or John Turner.
